Washington State Geologic Information Portal

Welcome to the Washington State Geologic Information Portal!

Through this online service offered by the Washington Division of Geology and Earth Resources, you can access interactive earth science mapping, data, and related information. More types of geologic information will be added to the information portal in the future, so please visit regularly to see what's new. You may also subscribe to our mailing list or visit our blog to receive announcements of new additions to the portal, as well as notification of our publications releases.

Citation information and direct downloads for GIS data layers can be found on our GIS data page. Layer descriptions and citation information can also be accessed within the interactive map service by clicking the green question mark in the Map Contents box next to the name of the data layer of interest. Note: we are in the process of creating and updating citations for all of our digital data. If you are unable to locate the citation for a specific data layer, please contact the Portal Manager.

Help with Using the interactive map Portal

For the user's convenience, we offer user guides in both written and video formats:

    1. Part 1: Introduction
    2. Part 2: Viewing and Printing
    3. Part 3: FAQs part 1
    4. Part 4: FAQs part 2

    Interactive Maps

Using our interactive maps, you can create and view custom maps, find out more information about map features, and download map data for use in a geographic information system (GIS). In addition to a variety of geoscience layers that can be turned on and off, each interactive map has many base layers to choose from, so you can customize your map in any number of ways. Please note that because of the volume of data available through these interactive maps, data loading and identification operations may not be instantaneous; we thank you for your patience.

    Other Earth Science Information Sites

High-quality geoscience mapping and data for Washington is available from other websites outside of DNR:

    Interactive Maps

    • USGS/AASG mapView - The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) is a Congressionally mandated project led by the U.S. Geological Survey and Association of American State Geologists. The purpose is to build a national archive of standardized geologic map information. This national archive is “virtual” – you can access it through a searchable catalog that contains information on over 88,000 geoscience maps and reports dating back to the 1800's, with links to hundreds of publishers.
    • USGS National Map Viewer - A U.S. Geological Survey site that allows you to interactively view "The National Map" data as a map, customize the view, and print a map
    • USGS Earth Explorer - Allows you to search, download, and order U.S. Geological Survey products from many datasets
    • USGS 3D Hydrogeologic Framework Model of the Columbia Plateau Regional Aquifer System - Web interface allows users to explore a 3-D geologic framework model developed for the Columbia Plateau regional aquifer system as part of a USGS assessment of groundwater availability
    • Washington State Orthoimage Portal - Allows you to view and download orthoimagery of Washington, prepared from aerial photographs and other data
    • Washington Department of Ecology GIS Applications - Access to GIS applications that the Department of Ecology uses in accomplishing its mission of protecting the land, air, and waters of the state. Topics include shoreline aerial photos, regulated facilities, coastal atlas, well log viewer, environmental data, and water quality information
    • DNR Forest Practices Application Review System (FPARS) - FPARS is designed to streamline the processing of Forest Practices Applications and improves the public's ability to review proposed forest activities; it can also be used for creating base maps for other purposes

    • USGS National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) - A U.S. Geological Survey resource for maps and related data about geology, hazards, earth resources, geophysics, geochemistry, geochronology, paleontology, and marine geology.
