DNR and WSU Extension offer hands-on forest health workshop
Forest and Range Owner Field Day, Saturday, June 22 in Tonasket

OLYMPIA – To help small forest landowners, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Washington State University Extension (WSU Extension) will host a forestry field day on Saturday, June 22, in Tonasket.

 Who:DNR and WSU Extension
What:Forest and Range Owners Field Day
 Why:

To help small forest landowners learn about western spruce budworm and pine bark beetle damage and how to reduce risk.
 When:June 22, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Where:Fire Springs Ranch - Residence of Mark and Rae Morris, 64 Fire Springs Rd., Tonasket, WA

 Directions:

From Hwy 97, go east on Jonathan St. NE. Jonathan turns into Havillah Rd. Continue east approximately 14 miles. Turn left (north) on Dry Gulch Ext Rd, then left (west) on Swanson Mill Rd/Mt. Hull Rd. Take slight right on to Forest Service 3525 Rd, then another slight right on Fire Springs Rd to field day site. Follow the Signs!
In addition to several educational and hands-on sessions about forest health issues, DNR and WSU Extension Forest and Range Owners Field Days are great opportunities to learn first-hand from forestry professionals and other landowners about a variety of topics including: chainsaw safety, wildlife habitat, forestry taxes, landowner assistance programs, selling timber and growing shiitake mushrooms.

The June 22 field day will include a hands-on session where landowners will learn to measure the density of their forest and assess risks such bark beetles and western spruce budworm. Last summer, Ferry County and eastern Okanogan County were included in a Forest Health Hazard Warning issued by Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark due to western spruce budworm defoliation.
