Celebration of Arbor Day set for Spokane this week
Commissioner Goldmark will lead tree planting
OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), along with the Spokane Conservation District, will recognize seven cities that have created healthy urban forests. This recognition signifies that they have completed steps to plan for the maintenance and care for city trees.

At 9:15 a.m., Jim Armstrong with the Spokane Conservation District will introduce Garth Davis, Forestry Program Manager, to give a brief history of the District’s services.
Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark will lead with opening remarks on DNR’s Urban and Community Forestry Program. He will then recognize all the Spokane County Tree City USA communities and present them with their awards. These Tree Cities include:
- Rockford
- Fairfield
- Spokane
- Airway Heights
- Millwood
- Cheney
- Liberty Lake
Avista Utilities will also receive their first Tree Line USA award, which recognizes best practices in urban arboriculture.
Following the awards ceremony, Commissioner Goldmark will lead the planting of a Cockspur hawthorn, which is the Avista Utility Compatible Tree of the Year. This tree will become a memorial tree as part of The Susie Forest.
