UW to present progress on forest biomass study
Two meetings are open to the public as research reaches halfway point
OLYMPIA – The University of Washington, along with TSS Consulting, will present a progress report on a statewide forest biomass inventory study currently underway. The public and interested parties are invited to attend and ask questions about the study. Commissioned by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the study will determine the volume of forest biomass in Washington State that is available for sustainable commercial use to produce energy.

Forest biomass at DNR
In 2009, the legislature authorized DNR to implement biomass energy pilot projects in eastern and western Washington. Removing biomass feedstock in ecologically sustainable ways to produce energy (liquid fuels or heat and electricity) can:
- Provide income for forest landowners while improving forest health;
- Create rural jobs;
- Reduce wildfires and greenhouse gas emissions; and
- Aid in the production of renewable energy.
