Commissioner and Governor prepare for fire season
Annual test insures safety for elected officials while visiting fires this summer
OLYMPIA – Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark will welcome Governor Jay Inslee as they both take the State Firefighters’ Work Capacity Test in anticipation of this year’s fire season.
The Work Capacity Test is known informally as the pack test. The pack test measures a firefighter’s muscular strength and aerobic endurance, and includes a timed walk and successful deployment of a fire shelter.
The Governor and Commissioner take the test annually in order to be able to safely travel to fire lines in the unfortunate event of a large or hazardous wildfire. Their efforts highlight the need to be safe and prepared in the face of wildfire throughout the state.
Videographers, photographers, reporters, assignment editors, and any media personnel requiring safe access to local wildfire incidents are invited to complete a fire shelter test. Before attending this event, media participants must watch this 25-minute fire shelter deployment video.
