State DNR to close Preachers Slough Road, May 13 - 24
Closure supports ongoing work to improve public access
OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will close Preachers Slough Road near Montesano for two weeks beginning May 13 for road maintenance and repairs to the parking area. The project supports continued public access improvements at Chehalis River Surge Plain Natural Area Preserve, which is managed by DNR.
| Who:|| Washington State Department of Natural Resources, Natural Areas Program|
| What:|| Preachers Slough Road Closure |
| When: || May 13 - 24|
| Where:||Preachers Slough Road, off Hwy 107, southwest of Montesano.|
Road will be closed at the bridge. There is still access to the old interpretive trail.
|The road and parking area work is part of a 3-year project to improve public access and habitat in the area. DNR is developing a shoreline trail that will lead from the parking area to fishing spots on the river bank that are popular with area residents. In 2013, DNR will also install a car-top boat launch for hand-carried boats such as canoes, kayaks and other small boats.|
For more information about the closure, contact Birdie Davenport, DNR Natural Areas Manager, 360-902-1434 (office), 360-789-5754 (cell), firstname.lastname@example.org.
DNR manages 150,000 acres of diverse landscape to protect native ecosystems and the plant and animal species that depend on them as part of a statewide system of Natural Resources Conservation Areas and Natural Area Preserves. Many of these areas also provide access for education and low-impact public use. Of these, 53 sites are Natural Area Preserves (with the highest level of protection for native species and ecosystems), and 29 sites are Natural Resources Conservation Areas (which protect ecosystems and unique natural features and provide limited low-impact public use).
