State Committee on Geographic Names reschedules next meeting to November 16
Comment period on public’s proposals also extended

OLYMPIA –The Washington State Committee on Geographic Names has rescheduled its next regular meeting to November 16, 2012. The committee meets twice a year to consider proposals from the public concerning the naming of geographic features in Washington State.

Who: Washington State Committee on Geographic Names 
What:Semi-annual public meeting
When: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., November 16, 2012
Where: Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington Street SE, Room 172, Olympia, Washington 98501

Why: 

Determine which proposed name changes will advance to the Board of Natural Resources, acting as the Washington State Board on Geographic Names, for a final decision.

Proposed geographic names
The Committee extends the comment period to Friday, November 2, 2012, for the following geographic name proposals, proposed by members of the public:

  • Erlands Point (Kitsap County) – Clarification
  • Glencanaan Mountain (Chelan County) – New name
  • Gossip Islands (San Juan County) – Clarification
  • Griggs Creek (Thurston County) –New name
  • Kangaroo Point (San Juan County) – Clarification
  • Lake Smokiam (Grant County) – Change the name of Soap Lake
  • Lone Tree Island (San Juan County) – Clarification
  • nəxʷx̣áʔəy (Pronounced "Nu-Ha-A") (Jefferson County) – Change the name of Squamish Harbor Sisters Point (Mason County) – Clarification
  • Teemux Creek (Columbia County) – Change the name of Squaw Creek
  • Tharold Pond (San Juan Island) – Clarification
  • Tsoo-Yess River (Clallam County) – Change the name of Sooes River
  • Wayback Brook (Snohomish County) – New name
  • Wenas Mammoth Mountain (Yakima County) – New name

Public comments accepted
Comments on these proposals may be made at the November 16 meeting or submitted in advance (no later than 5 p.m., November 2) by email to: bogn@dnr.wa.gov
