Web X-Tender FAQ's

Can I access WebXtender using my Mac?

Not directly. However, if you use a PC emulation program such as Virtual PC, and have installed Microsoft Windows XP or 2000, and use Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can successfully access WebXtender. If you try using Internet Explorer for Mac directly, without the pc emulation program, it will not work.

A recent development, the use of the INTEL chipset in MACs, enables the current generation of MACs to run Microsoft Windows in a separate partition. This generation of MACs can run WebXtender.

The first time I click a query result, an applet appears and asks me to download something. What should I do?

The interactive client viewer has not been downloaded and installed. The applet is needed to view images in your browser. Choose ACCEPT to allow the applet to download and install.

Why is my query not finding anything?

Make sure you are using the proper format for entry. Example: Section 3, T18N, T03E should be entered 18 3E on the TR line and *03* on the Section line. Use only minimal criteria. A broad search of Section, Township and Range will give a full list of all documents available in our system. If there are too many, then use a more restrictive search adding Type or Surveyor, etc.

I am looking for a document I know exists, but why can’t I find it?

If your document or area of interest is along a Township or Range line, you must do the same search in the other Township or Range. Documents are not indexed in contiguous Township or Ranges.

Why am I getting an error that says, THE USER IS CONNECTING TO THE DATASOURCE. MULTIPLE LOGINS ARE NOT ALLOWED ?

You did not log out properly and must wait 15 minutes for the server to complete its "time out" or someone in your office is using the ID.

When I click the LOGOUTword I get ERROR ON PAGE and the timer window doesn’t appear when I log on.

Your web browser is blocking pop-up windows and the timer is a pop-up window.  Allow the browser to open pop-up windows for the web site.

If you are using Windows XP and have installed Service Pack 2, you will need to modify an ActiveX setting to allow batch printing in WebXtender. With WebXtender open and the results of a query on screen, do the following:

1. Click TOOLS on the browser menu bar above

2. Click INTERNET OPTIONS

3. Click the SECURITY TAB

4. Click the CUSTOM LEVEL button below

5. Scroll down to DOWNLOAD UNSIGNED ACTIVE X CONTROLS listing

6. Click the PROMPT radio button

7. Click OK

8. Click YES

9. Click OK (exits out of options)

10. Click PRINT DOCUMENTS TAB
(Wait for message)

11. Click error message at the top of the screen highlighted in yellow.

12. Select INSTALL ACTIVEX CONTROL
(Wait patiently)

13. Click INSTALL button

How do I save an image to my hard disk?

Here are the steps needed to save an image:

1. Open document from the QUERY RESULTS list.

2. In the tool bar just above the image, left mouse click the hand to un-select PAN MODE.

3. With mouse place arrow on one corner of image and drag it diagonally across image to select entire image (or just the part that you wish to save.)

4.Right mouse click on the image, then select MAGNIFY. (The image will open in a new window)

5. Click FILE/SAVE AS. You can then name it, select where you want it saved, and select the type of file (probably a TIFF.)

How do I create and print blowups?

Here are the steps needed to create and print a blowup:

1.  Open document from the QUERY RESULTS list.

2.  In the tool bar just above the image, left mouse click the hand to un-select PAN MODE.

3.  With mouse place arrow on one corner of image portion you wish to save and drag it to the opposite and upper/lower corner of the portion.)  The selection will turn green.

4.  Right mouse click on the selection, then select MAGNIFY. (The image will open in a new window).

5.  Click EDIT then KEEP ASPECT RATIO. Click FILE/PRINT.  The blowup should print to your default system printer.

6. If you wish to save the selection, click FILE/SAVE AS  You can then name it, select where you want it saved, and select the type of file (probably a TIFF.)

How do I batch print?

1. With a QUERY RESULT set, click the PRINT DOCUMENTS Tab.  (You will get a popup the first time, asking to load an applet, respond yes.  There will be a delay).

2. The query screen will re-appear as black text on a white background.  Each item in the result set will have a check box.

3. Select the checkbox for each item in the result set you wish to print.

4. Click the Print button to batch print all selected items.  Your printer will print all images according to your default printer settings.

I cannot view images after a query.

The problem is related to Internet Explorer automatically blocking unsigned ActiveX controls and then not running the controls even if they are downloaded and installed by clicking on the SECURITY BAR at the top of the Internet Explorer window (below the menus and buttons).

When you can't view the documents, you get a set of messages in red and black print.  The last line of the messages says"To view this page as a document or static image click here."
However, there is a better way to solve the problem.

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Click on the TOOLS menu and choose "Internet Options" from the menu.

3. Click on the SECURITY tab of the Internet Options screen.

4. Click on the CUSTOM LEVEL . . .button.

5. Scroll down a little bit until DOWNLOAD UNSIGNED ACTIVEX CONTROLS section shows up and click on the little circle next to PROMPT (radio button).

6. Just below that is the section with INITIALIZE AND SCRIPT ACTIVEX CONTROLS NOT MARKED AS SAFE.  Click on the little circle next to PROMPT (radio button).

7. Click on the OK button to close the CUSTOM SETTING window.

8. Click on the OK button to close the Internet Options window.

9. When viewing documents, the Internet Explorer security bar will show up just below the menus and buttons.  Click on this security bar and choose to download the ActiveX control.

10. When prompted, install the ActiveX control.

11. Click on the GO button next to the URL for the web site (below the menus) in Internet Explorer to view the button bar and documents correctly.

After downloading and installing the ActiveX control for the web site, the Internet Explorer settings may be set back by doing the following:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Click on the TOOLS menu and choose INTERNET OPTIONS from the menu.

3. Click on the SECURITY tab of the Internet Options screen.

4. Click on the CUSTOM LEVEL . . . button.

5. Scroll down a little bit until DOWNLOAD UNSIGNED ACTIVEX CONTROLS section shows up and click on the little circle next to DISABLE (radio button).

6. Just below that is the section with INITIALIZE AND SCRIPT ACTIVEX CONTROLS NOT MARKED AS SAFE.  Click on the little circle next to DISABLE (radio button).

7. Click on the OK button to close the CUSTOM SETTINGS window.

8. Click on the OK button to close the Internet Options window.

Once the ActiveX control is installed on the computer, these settings are no longer necessary. That is why they can be set back to the previous setting.

What web browsers are compatible with WebXtender?

The Microsoft Internet Explorer browser is the only browser we know of that supports WebXtender. The Mozilla browser does not support WebXtender.

When I click the "Submit" button for a query, I used to get a results list. Now I get "The XML page cannot be displayed: cannot view XML input using XSL style sheets. Please correct error. The style sheet does not contain a document element."

If you updated Microsoft Windows recently, you may have installed Microsoft Framework.net 2.0. This will cause a display problem within WebXtender if Microsoft Framework.net 1.1 was not previously installed properly.

If you are having a display problem, go to Settings/Control Panel. Open Add/Remove Programs and see if Microsoft Framework.Net 2.0 is installed. If you find it, remove it. Exit out of the Control Panel and restart WebXtender. You will need to reinstall the Interactive Client Viewer once again.

This is the software applet necessary for WebXtender to view TIF images using the Internet Explorer browser. Review of the Activex settings may be necessary for the applet prompt to appear. (See question #2 above.)

I have turned off the pop-up blocker and still cannot get images to come up on the screen. The Interactive Client Viewer is still not installed. What is the problem?"

What appears to be the problem is the pop-up blocking of additional toolbars added to Windows Internet Explorer i.e. Yahoo, Google, etc. Go into the setup or properties of both these plug-ins and turn off pop-up blocking. This will allow the Interactive Client Viewer to load.
