Welcome to the Engineering and General Services Division. We support the infrastructure DNR uses to manage and maintain millions of acres of state trust lands and other state-managed public lands in Washington. We maintain the 12,000 miles of roads on state lands plus hundreds of DNR automobiles, trucks, fire engines, boats, heavy equipment, machines, and administrative facilities.
We do more than maintain and repair machines and buildings. Each year, our Forest Roads program improves salmon habitat by removing culverts and other barriers from streams. We also show foresters and engineers better ways to build roads and bridges on forestland.
As the office of the State Surveyor we are the mapping and surveying authority for the State of Washington; our Land Survey Office coordinates surveys of millions of acres of land managed by DNR. Our Title & Records Office manages the official land records for Washington State trust lands and DNR-managed lands.
Our Resource Mapping Program is the place to come for maps of hiking trails or state forests, aerial photos, topographic maps, land surveys, or GIS data about Washington State.
We also host the Washington State Board on Geographic Names. This six-member board is chaired by the Commissioner of Public Lands and works with local, state, and federal agencies to designate the official names of our state’s geographic features.
