Welcome to the Asset Management and Protection Division. Washington is one of the few states that have kept most of the land granted by the federal government at statehood. By law, DNR is entrusted with the responsibility of managing these assets for a number of public benefits – revenue, clean water, public safety, recreation, and conservation.
Our division contributes strategic planning, research, and technical support to help achieve working landscapes and healthy ecosystems that benefit all the people of Washington. We examine DNR’s assets portfolio and buy, sell, and trade land and real property to produce a maximum return to trust beneficiaries, such as public schools and universities, counties, and other state institutions.
On the protection side, we provide land management for natural area preserves, natural resource conservation areas, public access and recreation, and stewardship on all DNR-managed lands. We also coordinate the department’s State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) activities.
Through federal and state grant programs designed to protect endangered and threatened species, we promote stewardship and conservation programs that protect forestlands from conversion to non-forest uses.
